Matthew 7:24-27, Luke 6:47-49

Ellen G. White Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing p. 147-152

Read the parable from Matthew 7:24-27

  1. What theme in the Sermon on the Mount does this parable speak to?

Therefore whoever _____________these sayings of Mine, and _______________ them…” (Matthew 7:24)

Matthew 7 is the conclusion of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. The theme in the last portion of this chapter (as does much of this discourse) centers around the importance of right-doing, rather than simply hearing the word or claiming to be right. (James 1:22-25, Luke 11:28, 1 John 3:18)
  1. Discuss: What type of parable is this?

  1. What is the solid rock on which we can base our security?

“For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is _____________  _______________.” (1 Corinthians 3:11, see Ephesians 2:19-22, 1 Peter 2:4-10)

“The grass withers, the flower fades, But the __________ of our God stands __________.” (Isaiah 40:8, see 1 Peter 1:25)

“Behold, I lay in Zion a _____________ for a _____________” (Isaiah 28:16)

It is not simply enough to know about Jesus–we must place our faith in Him and act on His word in order to experience the security He offers.

  1. What things might be represented by the foundation of sand?

“The hail will sweep away the refuge of __________________,

And the waters will overflow the hiding place.” (Isaiah 28:17)

  1. If we are saved by grace through faith in Christ, why does Jesus place such emphasis on both “hearing” and “doing”? (Ephesians 2:8-9, Romans 10:17, John 10:27, James 1:22,
    James 2:14-26)

  1. If we find that our spiritual house is built on an unsteady foundation, is there any hope?

“Say to them: ‘As I live,’ says the Lord GOD,
‘I have no pleasure in the death of the
wicked, but that the wicked ______________
from his way and live. Turn, turn from your
evil ways! For why should you
    ________________, O house of Israel?’”
    (Ezekiel 33:11, see John 3:16-17,
    Acts 16:31, Romans 10:9)
